A Breakthrough win for the Club
The Hurstville Men’s Metropolitan Major Pennant team set a new standard for the club with their hard-fought 4½ / 2½ win over Wallacia Golf Club to claim the club’s first Major Pennant. It was both a stressful and exciting day at Riverside Oaks for the team, particularly for manager Khristian Kerrigan, who watched the events unfold.
The Hurstville players were in control of the match for the first nine holes, but Wallacia were not going down without a fight and they managed to close the gap in several of the games. It was a nervous time as memories started to arise from two years ago when the Hurstville team were defeated in the final by the narrowest of margins.
Todd Shaw, playing at No. 7, was the first player to claim a win. Todd defeated his opponent with a comfortable score of 4/3. Lachlan Plowes in the No. 6 match had no luck on the day. He had a chance to close out his game being 2 up with 2 to play but his opponent managed to fight back into the game and it was all square after 18 holes. It took another three sudden death holes to determine the winner and unfortunately, Lachlan lost on the 21st hole.
In game No. 5 Michael Brant was too strong with a convincing 7/5 win. Michael saved his best win of the season for the final with his opponent having only lost one match previously. Mike West, playing at No. 3, was very solid in taking a 3/2 win.
With two matches to go Hurstville had a 1 point lead. The team needed to win one of the last two matches but each of our players had higher handicaps than their opponents.
Congratulations to all the players and manager Khristian. The club is immensely proud of their achievements.
