Hurstville v Bondi at Hurstville
The T.L. Warren & W. Gibson Pennants kicked off today with the Hurstville teams facing Bondi. Warren and Gibson are fourball matches played in a match-play format. T.L. Warren is for players with a handicap no lower than 11, and W. Gibson players have handicaps no lower than 17.
The first to tee off this morning were the Warren team of Mark Roberts and David Hancock. The team started in a blaze of glory with David sinking a 30-foot putt to win the first hole. After a see-sawing match, the team from Bondi edged away to 3/2 win. The second pair of John Worthington and Roy Marshall had the lead until Bondi rallied and won the last two holes to take the match to a tie.
Last off for the Warren team was the pair of Ron Brennan and Blake McEntyre. Ron and Blake teed off on the 18th with the match all square and Hurstville needing the win to tie the overall result. No pressure, fellas. The match was decided by a putt-off, with all four players having the opportunity to sink a putt to win the match. In the end, it was Ron who sank the winning putt and will forever more be known as the Lord of the Putt. The Warren team finished the day all square 1½ to 1½.
Following the Warren team was the Gibson pair of Ian Edwards and Jake May. Basically, Jake had a blinder, and the Hurstville pair were quickly out to a 4-hole lead. Bondi edged back slightly, but Jake and Ian were never really troubled and took a 4/3 win. The second Gibson pair was Michael Predkowski and first timer, Terry Pollock. Michael and Terry played good golf, but they unfortunately came up against a Bondi team that was on fire. Bondi won the match 5/4. Last into the clubhouse were the pair of Tony O’Reilly and Tod Brown. Tony and Tod were dormie 2 down on the 17th and needed to win the last two holes. The Bondi team showed their short game skills with two impressive approach shots and won the hole, and a 3/1 win. Bondi won overall 2 to 1.
Next week, the Hurstville team will have a day beside the seaside when they visit Bondi for the reverse fixture and the chance for some revenge.
