Hurstville v Kareela at Cronulla Golf Course
Round 6 of the Super Senior Pennants was held at Cronulla GC on Monday 18 August.
While overcast, we were hopeful of playing our matches in reasonable conditions. The Cronulla golf course had been closed over the weekend and we were pleased that the club opened 18 holes for play of the pennant matches. Motorised carts were not permitted on the course.
Our four top guns were unavailable for this game against Kareela. Perry Pericles stepped up for his first game in 2025 and Jim Pedone made his debut into SSPs. Unfortunately, Murphey’s Law showed its ugly side and, soon, conditions deteriorated to a point where many greens became unplayable. Given the rain which fell in Sydney last week, the course reached its limit of saturation. Some clubs, whose season is dependant on today’s result, preserved in the conditions. We were not in that position so the result today was not imperative for our inclusion in the finals series. Many of our matches finished at the 9th hole and match scores taken at that time. Tim Hooper and Roy Marshall bravely continued playing. Tim maintained his 9-hole lead of 3 up and Roy couldn’t claw back a 2-hole deficit. Joe Belinha forced a draw, Darrell Moss won 1 up and Tim Hooper revelled in the conditions for a 3up win. All of our players are commended for their huge effort on a very trying day.
Congratulations to Kareela for a great team effort and our thanks to Cronulla for their hospitality including a hot meal after the game.
