Hurstville 3½ Defeated Macquarie Links 1½

The 2026 Mixed Pennants season kicked off at The Coast Golf Club, where Hurstville faced off against Macquarie Links. Usually, The Coast is one of Sydney’s most stunning spots in summer—but not this time. We got hit with wild southerly winds and cold rain showers. Whale watching? Not a chance.

At the halfway mark, things weren’t looking great for Hurstville—most of our teams were trailing. But it turns out we were just saving the best for last, with some epic comebacks on the back nine holes.

Judy Smith and Tim Hooper had the biggest win of the day with 6/5 and managed to finish their match before the rain started chucking it down. Dave Buchanan and Danielle Leary also had a strong win with 4/2. Pam Northey and Nick DeCean took their match to the penultimate hole but couldn’t get on top of their opponents.

No. 5s, Janet Allam and Branko Kulevski, fought back from 2 down to halve their match on the last hole. The Reserves, Vicki Hoare and Ian Rystrand, playing in his first pennant match, were also down with three holes to go. They fought back to win the next two holes, but could only manage to halve the final hole for a 1 down loss.

The No. 1s, Janette Lisle and Rowan Hooper, were the last team on the course. They needed a half or better to win the day for Hurstville. The pair were up for the challenge and won their match 2 up.
