Hurstville v Muirfield
Round 1 of the T.L. Warren & W. Gibson Trophy pennants was played at Hurstville on Sunday with the home team hosting Muirfield. The Warren and Gibson pennants are for B grade (11+) and C grade (17+) male players and each match is played as a team of two players.
Warren Team
The Warren team was led out by Ron Brennan and Nick De Cean. Nick struggled early in the match, but his partner Ron gave the pair an early lead, which ultimately resulted in their impressive 5/4 win.
Matt Kumjew’s steady, up‑the‑middle‑of‑the‑fairway style paired well with the big‑hitting Jake May. After not troubling the 15th fairway at any point, Jake punched a beautiful low shot through the trees, landing close to the flag on the 15th green. He sank the putt to finish the match with a 4/3 win.
We will, however, need to check the greenkeeper’s shed for leaks after Jake’s drive from the 5th tee bounced off the roof.
The third pair for the Warren team was Tim Hooper and Joe Belinha, who put on a clinic around the greens. Twice, Tim chipped in from off the green, and Joe’s putting was exceptional. As we know, pennants are won on the greens.
Gibson Team
There are some new faces in the Gibson team, so it was great to see the team take a 2 matches to 1 win in their first round. Michael Predkowski partnered with first-timer Stephen Ireland and had a most emphatic win 6 and 5. The other winners were Tony O’Reilly and the mercurial Terry Pollock, winning 3 and 2. Bad luck to our third team, Tod Brown and Dave Matthews, who lost 5 and 4.
