Hurstville v Georges River
It was an eventful day as Hurstville hosted the team from Georges River. Matt Kumjew came within inches of a hole‑in‑one on the 13th, his tee shot leaving a divot just shy of the cup. Not to be outdone, Nick De Cean — playing in the following group — had his own tee shot skim the edge of the hole. You don’t often see two tap‑in birdies in a row on the 13th hole.
Nick also produced the play of the day when his ball bounced off the Georges River Team Manager and somehow ended up in the manager’s jacket pocket. Lucky we’re playing preferred lies.
Warren Team
No.1s Mark and Ron were in command from the outset, with Ron bossing the greens with expert-level putting. One of their opponents told me after the game that no matter how well they played a hole, Ron would simply towel them up on the greens.
After the first nine, Tim and Nick were 1 up. With a nod and a wink, Tim assured me they had plenty in reserve. He wasn’t wrong—they went on to claim a convincing 5&3 win.
Jake and Matthew gave their opponents a three‑hole head start before they began hunting them down. After grinding their way back into the match, Jake drained a 6‑metre putt on the 16th to bring it back to all square. It remained tied through to the 18th, with their match to be determined by the last two putts. Matt faced a 7‑metre attempt while his Georges River opponent had a 6‑metre putt. We’ve all seen Matt putt, and 7 metres was never going to trouble him. His ball dropped, Georges River’s didn’t, and the Warren Team completed a 3-0 clean sweep.
Gibson Team
Emphatic win by Gibbos this week at home 3-0. Peter and Terry, Stephen and Paul as well as Tony and Graeme all had comfortable wins on Sunday, congrats and well played. Of particular note, Peter and Terry were confident after nine holes with a strong 5 up lead. In what we assume was a sporting gesture, they proceeded to lose the next two holes. Fortunately they righted the ship and went on to a fantastic 6&4 win.
The next game is away for the return leg at Georges River. A big thank you to all who supported both the Warren and Gibson teams at home this year.
